The Rise of Electronic Music in Belgium

From New Beat to the world stage: how Belgium became a powerhouse of electronic music culture.

Belgium's contribution to electronic music is often underestimated. But dig a little deeper and you'll find a country that has been at the forefront of dance music for over three decades.

It all started with New Beat in the late 1980s. Born in Belgian clubs, this slow, heavy style of electronic music was one of the first distinctly European dance music genres. Tracks like "Flesh" by A Split Second put Belgium on the global dance music map.

Then came the 1990s and the explosion of techno. Fuse, which opened in Brussels in 1994, became one of Europe's most respected techno clubs. It hosted legends like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, and Laurent Garnier. Three decades later, Fuse is still going strong, welcoming the next generation of techno artists.

The Belgian festival scene is equally impressive. Tomorrowland, held annually in Boom, is now the world's most famous electronic music festival, attracting 400,000 visitors over two weekends. Dour Festival and Pukkelpop also feature strong electronic music lineups.

Brussels itself has become a hub for underground electronic music. C12, located beneath the Bourse building, hosts cutting-edge electronic and experimental music. UMI brings intimate club experiences. Spirito, set in a former Anglican church, creates a unique atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else.

The city's club scene is diverse and welcoming. From the hip-hop nights at Bloody Louis on Avenue Louise to the eclectic programming at Madame Moustache, there's something for every taste. And with venues concentrated in the city center, you can easily hop between them in a single night.

Belgian DJs and producers continue to make waves internationally. Amelie Lens, Charlotte de Witte, and Lotte are just a few of the Belgian artists who have risen to global fame in recent years.

Whether you're a seasoned raver or a curious newcomer, Belgium's electronic music scene has something to offer. And Brussels is the perfect place to experience it all.
